Wednesday 27th March has the quartet playing at Fleece Jazz, Stoke-by-Nayland (near Colchester, UK). On 3rd April we will play in Bristol at Fringe Jazz. Looking forward to both concerts very much - playing tunes from Earth Songs (which incidentally is getting some heavy attention on streaming platforms (over 100K in the first month) which is really pleasing. Thank you to anyone who has been streaming us, and very glad indeed you are enjoying the music…

Looking forward to to John Law and I getting our duo project “Naissance” released soon (on 33records). We are delighted to appear on this great label, and very excited about the future of the group with this forward-thinking organisation. The label is under wraps for now, but release will be in February 2024.

We are very excited about this. The music represents my compositions beautifully, and the interpretation by the guys in the band perfectly develops my material in an absolutely natural “live” way. The recording contains no overdubs or curious arrangements and this is basically how we sound in a concert!

Watch out for the release and forthcoming concerts.

In other news, John Law and I are currently working on finding a suitable label on which to release our duo work. This sensitive, beautifully introspective music is neither jazz nor classical, but borrows from both those genres and from wider world musics. Its hard to classify, which is why we have to be careful how it is released. But - it is mighty fine music and it WILL get out there!

Jon, Sunday September 17th.
Jon Lloyd Musictag:jonlloydmusic.com,2005:Post/72368282023-07-04T20:12:22+01:002023-07-04T20:12:23+01:00Summer Concerts
The new European contemporary jazz group The Jon Lloyd Quartet hits the south of the UK!

We are playing the Swanage jazz festival on Saturday 8th July and the Frome festival on Sunday 16th July. I will release it from my own bathroom if necessary, but the music is so good I don't believe I will need to!

Watch this space…

Also… John law and I have formed the duo “Naissance”, which will be performing soon. The session was fabulous, and I now have the privileged, enjoyable yet tricky job of listening to all the takes and distilling the music down to an album's length…

Some tunes will have to go, which can be a shame, but the aim, as always, is to produce the best album we can make right now. For any musician and band leader this is an amazing period combining excitement, introspection, delight and even fear (of picking the wrong stuff, when the right stuff lies unnoticed!)

Watch this space for details and, eventually, music!
Jon Lloyd Musictag:jonlloydmusic.com,2005:Post/71870022023-04-10T13:54:23+01:002023-04-10T13:54:23+01:00Duo recording!
On Saturday April 8th, John and I recorded our duo album at Crescent Studio in Swindon. We filmed a performance at The Lighthouse Studio Poole UK, posted six pieces on Youtube and so transmission of the new music began!

The European jazz flavour of the music stands out clearly, with world music elements contained within the compositions and improvisations alike. The music is subtle yet direct. It is supposed to make you feel good!

The quartet is great. Stunning pianist John Law is a longstanding colleague and friend, and really the only pianist anyone need ever know! Drummer Alex Goodyear is a startling young talent who I feel really lucky to have in this group - he has got the widest range of sound and texture. Nick Pini on bass has the subtlest command of tone, bowing and groove.

Super-sub bassist Henrik Jensen played with us in February at Bristol Bebop club and Birmingham Jazz club. The music went very well, with really gratifying feedback.

This year we are recording and touring. Please watch this space for information. Meanwhile, please check out the Youtube playlist of The Jon Lloyd Quartet. We are proud…
Jon Lloyd Musictag:jonlloydmusic.com,2005:Post/70550482022-09-07T17:23:40+01:002023-02-04T14:44:48+00:00New quartet!
Great to announce the Jon Lloyd Quartet!

In September 2022 the new JL quartet begins... featuring John Law on piano, Henrik Jensen on bass and Andy Chapman on drums.

We'll be playing a whole sheaf of my new compositions and getting into the studio and on tour. Two early 2023 concerts to warm up: February 2nd in Bristol at the Bebop Club and February 3rd at Birmingham Jazz.

Jon Lloyd Musictag:jonlloydmusic.com,2005:Post/70434332022-08-22T19:56:17+01:002022-08-22T19:56:17+01:00New projects...
This year I've hugely enjoyed playing John law's compositions with Renaissance. His pieces are based on the source material from the 15th and 16th centuries, and the harmonic textures created by Jasper Law gave us such a beautiful base over which to play... really creative and transportive. Each concert was immensely enjoyable and always different and fresh. Patrick Dunn's visuals were immaculate and to be honest I can't wait to play this project again.

I'm working on pieces for a new quartet featuring John again. It's been a while since we toured a quartet together and I've got a great feeling for this new music. Hopefully keeping the harmonic complexity John unravels wherever he goes, but basing this on fairly simple, direct melodic material. I'm moving further away from dissonance, looking towards European contemporary jazz for more and more of the settings of my pieces. Older and less aggressive perhaps? Well why not... the duo recording with Stan Adler set me firmly on the road back to melody. I miss Stan massively, and the new album when it comes will be dedicated to this unique musician.
Jon Lloyd Music
