Jon Lloyd QUARTET

"His tunes are steeped in the ECM aesthetic, and he and long-time collaborator John Law on piano make it sound like the only music you ever want to hear."

John Turney, London Jazz News, 2023

This UK based group presents vibrant European Contemporary Jazz, played by a quartet of superb musicians…

The leader and composer is tenor and soprano saxophonist Jon Lloyd. Jon has been part of the UK jazz and free music scene for several decades (Paul Rogers, Mark Sanders, John Law, Stan Adler),  and has now turned his attention to European contemporary jazz; using classical and non-western music influences as well as jazz sources to write vibrant, melodic and emotionally direct new jazz compositions. The quartet also comprises the virtuosic John Law (Congregation, Re-Creations, Art of Sound Trio with Yuri Golubev, Asaf Sirkis) on piano, Nick Pini (Laura Marling, Seth Lakeman, Izzie Yardley, Iain Ballamy) on double bass and Alex Goodyear (Yetii, Simon Spillett, Re-Creations, Jake McMurchie) on drums.

On tour we are now performing music from our forthcoming (February 2024) Ubuntu Music release “Earth Songs” for the first time, in venues across the UK and Europe.

“We present melodic, exciting and emotionally engaging compositions written by me specifically for this quartet. The members of this group have a wealth of experience across jazz and contemporary music and interpret my pieces perfectly with intelligence, energy, sensitivity, respect and enormous creativity.”

Mary James, Only Jazz: "All nine compositions are gems. The exquisite X and Y opens the album with buoyant bubbling soprano sax. Even at its most penetrating, it has a warm, serene, caramel sound. The melody is pastoral, gentle, songlike. The lyricism of John Law is always heart stopping, such delicate shading, especially in Yaga where the piano could be a sitar. In 5678 I felt we were in square dance territory, where quick footwork was needed as the time signatures crossed, got jumbled and tripped each other up. It was fun! I thought ‘This isn’t free jazz, I can hum this (phew!)’ and I relaxed, and so became more receptive to the delicacies on offer: the symphonic, almost-classical opening to V Points where the piano solo, with gentle snowflake motif (a signature John Law effect), creates a mood of uneasiness echoed by the slowly burning guitar, the wary walk of the sax towards a guitar that howls, a sense of chaos and pain which gently fades. The thrum of fingers on piano wires. There are many strands in this music, you uncover them with repeated listening. It is harmonious and democratic, there is no need for extended solos, yet take any instrument away and you would miss it."
